Made in the Midlands member Flowdrill (UK) Ltd are continuing to grow the use of Flowdrill as a simple and reliable alternative to traditional fixing methods.

One such success has been with The Laser Cutting Company of Sheffield, who have seen a big increase in orders where Flowdrill connections are offered. From an initial single pillar drill they have now added multiple drilling machines and have a cell dedicated to the process.

Charlie Day, New Business Development Manager at the Laser Cutting Company said “from the initial demonstration we felt friction drilling could offer many advantages to both ourselves and more importantly to our customers.  Our in-house design team incorporated Flowdrill into our TLCC Smart Design Production offering where we are seeing customers’ production time and costs fall by up to 50%.  Through smarter design and laser cutting customers enjoy a reduction in manufacturing processes needed for their projects, resulting in larger throughput, less space required, and all but eliminating margin for error.  Flowdrill contributes to this heavily by replacing the need for fixings such as welded captive nuts, which are fiddly, weak and time consuming to install.  The impact it has had is so much so we have now invested in a Trumpf Tube laser with flowdrill and tapping capability.

Noel Willows, Technical sales Engineer for Flowdrill (UK) said, “It is great to see a company achieve new business and growth by implementing the Flowdrill system. We supported the Laser Cutting Company in the start with an on-site demo and initial training, but they have really taken it on. We are looking at other sizes for them including the larger connections for the construction industry and excited to see the Trumpf machine when it is installed and assist with setting up the flowdrilling capability.

Flowdrill (UK) based in Shropshire use friction between the tool and the workpiece to form bushes which when tapped are an alternative to inserts, threaded bosses, welded nuts, hollow bolts. Sizes range from M2 to M30 including BSP sizes in material thicknesses from 0.5mm to 10mm. www.flowdrill.com
